day 12

Today we packed and have been traveling for the whole day. Meanwhile, we've been writing our final essay.

day 11

Today we finished our poster work and went to blick to get paper for wrapping our poster since we need to bring it all the way back to school. After that, we started working on our final essay.  working hour: 3 hours

weekly reflection 2

Our project came to an endpoint at the end of this weekend. We basically finished both our document and poster by Saturday. Our poster-making process went surprisingly well because we had everything designed and mostly planned out at the beginning of our project. So during this week, Grace and I first wrote the scripts for our interviews. We went over the interview clips again and took notes to better understand their perspective and draw deeper connections to their love stories.  One obstacle to our poster was that the original color paper that we glued on the canvas board was so wrinkled that Grace realized that anything we put on the board surface afterward won't stay. Therefore, we had to go to that art store to start the poster again. Honestly, I didn't think it was going to turn out much differently, but I was surprised by how smoothly and flat the poster came out the second time. That’s when I realized that we have to make our project perfect without  I think thr...

day 10

Getting close to the end of our project, we have got a lot done along our way. Because Grace and I are almost done with our poster, we sat with Jack to work on our documentary together in the morning. I wrote down different categories of the interview answers so it's easier for Jack to put them in order for editing. After that, since there was still empty space on the poster, Grace and I continued to work on adding more details, such as gluing stickers on and drawing more decorations to make it stand out more.   today's hour: 8.5 hrs total hour: 84 hrs

day 9

Because we had a few arguments in the past few days, this morning we discussed the documentary's common vision. It is sometimes hard to have all three of us agree on one point, so we took a long time comparing and deciding. Finally, we came up with one solution: whenever someone has an idea, one has to say it before actually working on it to avoid wasting time. After that, Jack edited the documentary, while Grace and I started working on the poster. Yesterday, we realized that we need one more figure to be on the poster because there's still space. So today we went over the interview clips to choose another girl that fits our theme, draw her out, and write the scripts. And we also redid some sketches and narratives for our poster.  today's work hours: 8.5 hrs total work hours: 75.5 hrs

day 8

Today is probably the most productive day so far. We started off today by finishing writing scripts for the seven interviewees. Even though it's much easier to just type and print it out, we still decided to do hand writing since it's more creative and we can enjoy the process more. Then we put the stories, name tags, and the paintings on the poster to arrange the layout. Later after lunch, Jack realizes that we might need more interview clips for more options, so we went to Brooklyn bridge to interview more people. After that, we went back to the art store for more glue so we can finish gluing the color paper on the canvas board. Then we fixed some blemishes on the poster, such as redoing the letters that got smudged.  today's hours: 8.5 hrs total work hours: 67 hrs

day 7

Starting off today, we went to an art store in Brooklyn to get the color paper that we need for our poster. Because the old ones that we glued on are wrinkled and got stained, we decided to get brain new papers but of the same type because we like that texture. However, we didn't find the same type of paper in that art store, so we had to go back to the one on Bond Street we went on the first day. After getting the right materials, we headed home to restart our poster. We ripped off the old ones and tried very carefully to glue the new ones on, which came out so nicely done and smooth. After that, Grace and I went back to the interview clips again to hear their stories more thoroughly and comprehend their more deeply. And then we started writing stories for the seven interviewees that we chose and painted, while Jack continued editing the documentary. However, we had an argument about the vision of the documentary but we worked it out by further discussions and comparing.  ...

day 6

So starting today, Grace and I began to officially work on our poster while Jack is in charge of the documentary editing. We sorted out 7 interviewees we like the most from all the clips and sketched their figures first. After that, we painted them with acrylic paint. The process was pretty long but fun because we got to know them better from painting them out. After we were done with painting and cutting, we started to think of what we wanna write for their stories. Later in the afternoon, we went out with Jack for transition scenes needed for the documentary.  work hours: 7.5 hrs  total work hours: 50 hrs

weekly reflection #1

It’s already the end of our first week doing our senior project in New York City. It felt a bit unreal but here we are halfway through our journey. Before going on this trip, I was hesitant and nervous about what would happen in New York because every time I went to New York, I always became overwhelmed by its chaos. I was also scared of getting rejected by people we tried to interview and then being shattered by our failed attempt.  Feeling uncertain but excited, our journey has begun. On the first day, we went to an extensive art store for art supplies for our poster. The store basically had everything we need, so we got color paper, a huge canvas board, sharpies, glue, collage paper, and so on. While Jack set up the camera and the microphone, Grace and I started organizing the product we’ve got and designing how we want our poster to be.  I remember on the first interview day, a sunny day, we went to Washington Square where there were many people just chilling in eve...

day 5

Today is our last day of the interview for this week, so we went to Washington square in the morning since there's always positive energy. However, today's weather was not really nice, but it did not really affect our mood and progress. After collecting a decent amount of clips, we went to Union Square in the afternoon. There we met two friends who also did a project of love on youtube. After that, we headed home to do more editing. While Jack worked on putting up the clips together, Grace and I started to choose the people we want for our poster. Today has been a productive day.  work hours of today: 8.5hrs  hours in total: 42.5 hrs

day 4

Today we went to Times Square and tried to do some interviews there. I used to think that it will be the easiest spot for the interview due to the number of people there are on the square. But the thing is that it's so crowded and overwhelming that everyone is so busy walking and no one will stop for our interview. Therefore, we decided to go back to Brooklyn since there were fewer crowds and people are just chilling in the park. So after lunch, we went to Dumbo, a Brooklyn bridge park, for more interviews. The weather is so nice today that a lot of people were at the park today, so we gathered many good clips of interviews. At the end of the day, we headed home to organize the clips we've got so far and wrote down each of them with the name of the interviewees and their stories.  total work hours: 8.5 hrs

Day 3

Today we went to Central Park, which is the largest park in New York. We interviewed a French girl who doesn’t speak fluent English but is still willing to tell us about her love story. There was also one old man who was very energetic and talkative, and he shared his first love who he has married for fifty years. Then we took the subway again to union square where we interviewed more people. Here I met my favorite people so far on the journey: a teenage best friends combo with the best vibe. They each shared their stories with us and told us not to change ourselves for sacrifice. After finishing our interview work of the day, we headed home to pick out clips that we can use for the documentary.  total work hour: 8.5 hrs

Day 2

Today is officially our first interview day. In the morning, we took subway to Washington square park for interview. It’s a sunny day and everyone in the park seem to be in good mood. I was so nervous at first because I don’t know how to react when we got rejected. But surprisingly, our interview process went pretty well. The First Lady that I interviewed was a 20-year-old teenage girl who’s sitting on the bench. We had a lighthearted conversation about her love story and it brightened up my mood and felt more encouraged to interview other people. Then we interviewed some other teenage girls, an old man, an elderly mom and her daughter, some couples and so on. After we had lunch, we went to a park called dumbo under the Brooklyn bridge and did more interviews in the afternoon. As we got more comfortable talking to people, we found the process exciting and relaxing. After that, we went to the lounge and looked back on the video clips that we got today and talked about the ways we w...

Day 1

Today was our third day in New York. In the morning, we went a very pretty art store that has basically everything we need for our poster. We got brushes, crylic set, oil paint, beautiful collage paper, and a huge canvas board. After that we went to buy some camera equipment and headed home. We tried to organize our stuff and designed how we want the poster to be like. We need to glue the color paper on the canvas board but the question is that the glue spray has toxic fumes so we can’t do it inside our room. However, we figured this out by just going down to spray it on the street—unexpected but so much fun. After we’re glued the color paper on the canvas, we went up again for the next step. Jack decided to work on setting up the camera, while grace and I started putting letters of our title “love in nyc” on the canvas. Since then on, we kept discussing about the poster design and the plans for the following days.  Total work hours: 8.5 hours
